Shipbuilding and Maritime Museum in the IGA Park Rostock

The Shipbuilding and Maritime Museum in Rostock is Germany's largest floating museum. Here, visitors can learn all they need to know about seafaring and shipbuilding on board a traditional ship.

With more than 12,000 exhibits on the ship, the Rostock Maritime Museum presents the history of shipbuilding – from the Slavic dugout to computer-based production in modern shipyards. The whole timeline of shipbuilding is brought to life for visitors, who can also investigate other maritime matters. The evolution of marine radio and aviation are presented alongside the past and present of port-based activities.

Visitors to the museum in Rostock can explore the inside of the large container ship, inspect the four main engines in the engine room and take a look at the ship's original bridge, sailors' quarters and hospital. The heritage-listed, 10,000-tonne container ship is docked in the IGA Park on the banks of the River Warnow. The permanent exhibition is complemented by special exhibitions and visitors can even get to grips with navigation marks as part of the open-air display. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–4 pm
