Norderney - The oldest North Sea health resort in Germany

Waves, water and wind dictate the natural rhythm of life on the seven East Frisian islands located in the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. One of the islands is Norderney – which has a tradition of thalasso therapies dating back more than 200 years.

Close your eyes, relax, open your mind, breath in the wonderful crisp sea air, feel light breezes tickle your cheeks, hear sea gulls cry high above, let waves whisper their lullaby as they break on the shore – all this is Norderney.

No matter what you are looking for - quiet moments full of peace or lively action and fun – you will find it on Norderney. Cultural events and sporting activities, a wide range of shopping facilities and gastronomic delights have branded the island.

Amid the unique landscape of the Wadden Sea mudflats, visitors will discover miles of sandy beaches, walking and jogging trails and designated thalasso paths. It is also a fascinating place to observe the way plants and animals adapt to an ever-changing environment.

Thalasso therapies have been practised on the island for centuries. Visitors wanting to recharge their batteries and escape from the stresses of everyday life have long been coming to this health resort on the North Sea. More recently, the bade:haus, Germany’s largest thalasso centre, has made its mark. Built near the sea, away from the hustle & bustle and surrounded by dunes and salt marshes it is a listed building that embodies the Bauhaus principles. This modern conversion of the original baths favours linear forms and natural materials yet is still in keeping with the exceptional architecture of the building. Accessibility for the disabled is also a primary concern.

Already as far back as 1797, when the sea-side-resort Norderney was founded, this unique mixture of fascinating contrasts attracted numerous visitors and famous personalities such as the aristocracy, high politicians and well-known artists and has continued to be so ever since. The island is a miscellaneous as its visitors.

There are regular ferry services to and from the island. We suggest that you leave your car on the mainland as there is no need for it on the island. Most places are within walking distance. Bicycles are very popular, you can hire one right here. You can also explore the island by taking a ride with the bus. Regular passenger lines offer their services and look forward to drive you almost to the end of the island and back again.
