Follow the Saar! Saar Cycle Route

Designated as a four-star premium route by the German Cyclists' Federation, this family-oriented cycling tour doesn't disappoint. Its level cycle paths follow the Saar river from the French border to Konz, where the river flows into the Moselle.

Your journey starts in Sarreguemines in France, stopping off for a break in Saarbrücken which has a host of cafés in its old quarter. Völklingen Ironworks offers an insight into 20th century iron and steel production. Of course, things were very different back in the days of France's Sun King Louis XIV, who founded Saarlouis as a fortified stronghold with a hexagonal layout. The Saar Bow is a remarkable natural feature where the river doubles back on itself in the tightest of bends. The House of Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach chronicles the fascinating history of this distinguished porcelain manufacturer. Just beyond Saarburg, you head downriver to the Saar's confluence with the Moselle at Konz. Terrain: the route is largely flat and runs mainly on asphalt paths. Some sections are along old towpaths. In the more industrial areas, it's hard to completely escape the noise of traffic. Scenery: river landscape along the Saar to its confluence with the Moselle including the Saar Bow. The Saar Valley is surrounded by gently rolling hills, meadows and forests. There are also a number of small medieval towns along the route.
