Herrenchiemsee, the largest of Lake Chiemsee's islands, was acquired in 1873 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as the site of his New Palace . You can still view the palace's state rooms with their fabulous baroque wall paintings, and the King Ludwig II Museum contains fascinating details about the Bavarian king's royal residences and other building projects.

Lindau's historical town centre is located on an island of the same name on Lake Constance and is connected to the mainland by a road bridge and a railway line. Situated in a scenic region of Germany near the border with Austria and Switzerland and with views of the Alps, Lindau is a popular destination with lovingly restored houses in the old quarter.
