With therapeutic springs, oxygen-rich air and a gently stimulating climate, the spa town of Bad Salzungen is perfect for health, relaxation and holidays.
Situated within the Werra valley, the resort is scenically bounded by the picturesque hilltops of the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön uplands.
Bathing in the potent salt water
More than one thousand years of healing tradition make the town one of the oldest saltwater spas in Germany. It owes this status to a gently stimulating climate and natural saltwater springs, which have a salt content of up to 27 per cent. Bad Salzungen is home to various clinics providing treatments for respiratory diseases, musculo-skeletal illnesses and skin disorders. Germany's first Celtic baths were opened here in 2000. The complex, made up of three round buildings, blends harmoniously with the evaporation works. Boasting a therapy centre, saltwater exercise pool and an attractive sauna suite with wellness area, it is the ideal place to relax and unwind.
Bad Salzungen's 16th century town hall and the Haunscher Hof – one of its oldest and best-preserved buildings – bear witness to the town's long history. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants in which to sit and watch the world go by, and the legendary Burgsee lake is only a hop, skip and a jump from the market square in the middle of town. Keen walkers will be thrilled by the extensive hiking country surrounding Bad Salzungen, with the local peak – the Frankenstein – proving a popular destination. From its summit walkers have an amazing panoramic view across the Werra valley and the Rhön hills to the Thuringian Forest. The spa resort of Salzungen is always worth a visit.
