Gourmet cycling in the Saarland
Next to France, you will not only find mellow hills and an enchanted scenery but also first-class cooking and selected wines. This seven-day cycling tour will take you all round the Saarland to discover the region’s variety and charm. Look forward to a fascinating route with different landscapes including forests, orchard meadows, vineyards as well as idyllic rivers and lakes.
At the end of each day you will be rewarded with an outstanding meal and spend the night in a bike-friendly hotel. Try typical dishes of the region or wine and dine in style.
Tour desription First leg: Saarbrücken – Mettlach, approx. 37.5 miles/60 km This first section of the tour will take you along the Saar from Saarbrücken to Mettlach. Do not miss stopping off at the World Heritage Site “Völklinger Hütte“, a unique former ironworks, or in Saarlouis, the secret capital of the Saarland. Once you have reached your destination Mettlach, go and visit the world-famous ceramics manufacturer Villeroy & Boch with its “Keravision“ exhibition displaying the company’s history stretching back over 250 years.
Second leg: Mettlach – Perl, approx. 28 miles/45 km On day two you will cycle along orchard meadows on the Saarland cycling route until you reach the wine village of Perl. It is worthwhile visiting the Roman Villa Borg nearby to see the best-preserved mosaic floor north of the Alps and learn about the sublime bathing culture of the Romans. In the evening, you will be treated to a four-course gourmet dinner including aperitif and corresponding regional wines.
Third leg: Perl – Weiskirchen, approx. 43 miles/70 km On the third day, you will have to tackle the most challenging bit of the tour, leading through the hilly low mountain range area of the Saarland. However, you can shorten your trip and take the bike bus from Merzig to Weiskirchen. Cheeky ...
Starting off in the wine village of Perl, you will cycle past vineyards, unmistakable scenery and ancient villages. Your destination of the day is the climatic spa of Weiskirchen. Here, you can look forward to a relaxed evening in your hotel “Vitalis Zentrum“ which is also a health and spa centre. And, of course, there will be another delicious dinner.
Fourth leg: Weiskirchen – Nohfelden, approx. 25 miles/40 km This part of the way runs on the Saar-Bostalsee cycling route and willl take you through the nature park Saar-Hunsruück to Nohfelden-Bosen on the “Bostalsee” lake.
Fifth leg: Nohfelden – Kirkel, approx. 31 miles/50 km Day five will bring you lots of clear views in an enchanting region while cycling up on the Saar-Nahe cycling route. Part of the way coincides with a former Roman road. Your destination is the village of Kirkel. The municipality oozes the spirit of the Middle Ages with a castle ruin located just a few metres from the centre. Dinner will be a gourmet menu – yes, another one – with four-courses and a champagne cocktail.
Sixth leg: Kirkel – Saarbrücken, approx. 34 miles/55km This is your last day, leading through the picturesque Bliesgau region. If you fancy a short trip over to France, just cycle over to Sarreguemines and then take the Saarbahn train to Saarbrücken.
