Leipzig, Bach memorial and St. Thomas' Church

Leipzig

Leipzig has seen many great minds come and go through the centuries: revolutionary thinkers and intellectuals from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to Martin Luther have left their indelible mark here.

If you would like to follow in Luther's footsteps in Leipzig, a good place to start is the Church of St. Thomas, which is still home to the world-famous St. Thomas choir today. Luther proclaimed his new ideas here in 1539. Contemporary impressions of the great Reformer can be found at the nearby gallery. The route to the gallery takes you past the historical Auerbachs Keller restaurant which Goethe liked to visit, and whose name is derived from a friend of Luther. Pleissenburg Castle, where Luther argued about his 95 theses with the Papal envoys in 1519, no longer exists. It was replaced by the new town hall in 1899.

Highlights

The Magic City of Leipzig has become renowned as a modern centre for music, hosting a eclectic programme of music events ranging from the Bach Festival and concerts by the Gewandhaus Orchestra to the four-day Wave Gothic Festival. History also continues to be written in Leipzig: the Monday demonstrations that started at St. Nicholas' Church played a major part in the fall of the Berlin Wall. This peaceful revolution is commemorated by the annual Festival of Lights.

Leipzig's original Krystallpalast, which first opened its doors in 1882, was one of Germany's largest entertainment venues at the end of the 19th century and featured international stars such as Josephine Baker and the Italian juggler Enrico Rastelli.

Since 1994 the new Krystallpalast Variety Theatre has been continuing the work of its predecessor, which was destroyed during the Second World War. And once again, thrilling acrobatics, captivating music, hilarious comedy and great cuisine have come together to provide audiences with a variety experience of world renown.

The fascinating history of this renowned art museum is a story of civic engagement. Back in 1848, when the Leipzig art association opened the municipal museum at the Moritzbastei, the hundred or so works on display were donations from the citizens of Leipzig. And the present-day collection of 3,500 paintings, 1,000 sculptures and 60,000 drawings and prints is largely comprised of gifts from private initiatives and generous patrons.

Maximilian Speck von Sternburg, Alfred Thieme, Adolf Heinrich Schletter, Fritz von Harck, Hans-Peter Bühler, Marion Bühler-Brockhaus: these are the names of people who have shaped the character of the museum for 150 years. The works of the current collection span the period from the late Middle Ages to the present day. These can now be displayed in full in the new 7,000m² museum building, which opened in 2004. There is a particular focus on Old German and Dutch paintings from the 15th to the 17th century, Italian paintings from the 15th to the 18th century, French paintings from the 19th century – including works by Eugène Delacroix, Edgar Degas and Claude Monet – and German paintings from 18th to the 20th century. A whole floor is devoted to comprehensive displays of works by Max Klinger and Max Beckmann. In the Contemporary Painting section, the museum features mainly exhibitions of painters belonging to the Leipziger Schule, such as Bernhard Heisig, Werner Tübke and Wolfgang Mattheuer, as well as extensive collections by the movement's younger generation led by Neo Rauch and Daniel Richter.
