Since its launch in 1983, the Munich Film Festival has cemented its position as the second-biggest film festival in Germany. Over 2,500 German and international media professionals working in film, TV and video, more than 600 journalists and around 70,000 visitors get together to watch over 200 films on 18 screens – making this a genuine audience festival as well as a key diary date for film critics and the film industry.
In excess of 4,000 feature films and documentaries have flickered across the screen at the Munich Film Festival to date, although TV has always been a significant player too. Munich is probably Germany's most diverse film festival, offering an eclectic programme from big-name, glittering premieres to no-budget underground movies. There's always a spotlight on films by German directors, screened in the New German Cinema and New German TV categories, and on the promotion of young talent – the International Programme is where directors such as Lars von Trier, Quentin Tarantino, Stephen Frears and Danny Boyle showed their early films. Nouveau Cinéma Français is devoted to that great film-making nation and Visiones Latinas to South American films, whilst American Independents is the first international platform for many independent directors. Steven Soderbergh, Jonathan Demme, Ethan and Joel Coen, Tom DiCillo and Richard Linklater are just some of those whose films first hit the big screen here – catapulting them into the film stratosphere.
