on Destination Germany
The division and unification of Germany is captured in two events that shook the world: the erection of the Berlin Wall on 13 August 1961 and its fall on 9 November 1989, the images of which were seen around the world. Today’s relics serve as visual reminders of nearly three decades of division. These include the East German border watchtower on Potsdamer Platz, which is the last of its kind still standing. The tower, restored as part of a private initiative, tells the story of a nation and its people and is a firm favourite with visitors.
