The Nibelungen saga is all about dragons, love, betrayal, gold and Siegfried, the hero of the tale. We find dragons and several Siegfried fountains on the Nibelung Trail and come to love the Odenwald low mountain range.

The Odenwald is situated between the Rhine, Main and Neckar rivers in south-west Germany. The Nibelung Trail is an athletic hike with a total climb of 4,000 metres. The blood red "N" on a white background guides us through the unspoiled Bergstraße-Odenwald UNESCO Global Geopark. We hike through boulder fields and past castles, and every now and again we are treated to expansive vistas of the Rhine Plain. A visit to the Dragon Museum in Lindenfels is a must for the young and the young at heart. We hike through Miltenberg's romantic Old Town and the Baroque town of Amorbach. Hikers can also marvel at living history and visit the Celtic circular ramparts and the Limes, the frontiers of the Roman Empire . The Nibelung Trail is a hiking route shaped by figures throughout history.

TIP: the local cuisine in Odenwald

Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:

"I recommend savouring the delicacies of the Nibelung Trail: traditional Apfelwein cider, a refreshing locally brewed beer and the very special Odenwald Kochkäs (sour-curd cheese)."
