Milestones leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall
1961 Germany has been divided for twelve years already when border police begin building the Berlin Wall on the morning of 13 August.
1989 A citizen-led movement emerges in East Germany. At the Monday demonstrations that began in Leipzig, East Germans demand they be given more rights.
1989 Hungarian border troops pull down the barbed wire fence to Austria. The cries within East Germany for freedom of travel become increasingly vociferous.
1989 In the summer, events begin to escalate – East German citizens take refuge in West German embassies in Warsaw, Prague and Budapest. On 9 October, 70,000 people take part in a peaceful demonstration in Leipzig, calling for freedom of travel for East German citizens. On the evening of 9 November, the Berlin Wall fell.
1990 Germany is reunified; 3 October becomes a national holiday in Germany – Tag der Deutschen Einheit, the Day of German National Unity.
