Calling all mountain bikers! For 162 kilometres of pure mountain-biking pleasure, look no further than the Stoneman Miriquidi trail in the Erzgebirge mountains. The challenging route covers nine of the highest peaks in the Saxon-Bohemian Erzgebirge region, three of which are beyond the Czech border.

Hikers too, can indulge in their passion in the Erzgebirge mountains. The Kammweg, a 289km quality-certified ridge trail, takes you from the eastern Erzgebirge mountains, across the Vogtland and on to Thuringia. As well as enjoying the magnificent scenery, you'll also discover museums, workshops demonstrating local crafts, and visible reminders of the region's mining heritage.

Once a year, the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance becomes the Flying Museum. For DO Days, a spectacular weekend of flying from 9 to 10 August 2014, the museum is transformed into an aircraft hangar. Those with a passion for aviation or transport heritage are in for a treat, with numerous guest aeroplanes on display outside. But there's more than just flying machines on offer. The varied programme has plenty to keep visitors big and small entertained: from passenger flights and impressive model aeroplane displays to painting your own biplane or dancing to classic rock tunes.

Experience the indescribable feeling of cruising the ocean at the Hamburg Cruise Days! From 1 to 3 August 2014, six gargantuan cruise ships will be anchored in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, bringing a magical maritime atmosphere to the city. The breathtaking Blue Port illuminations are a work of art, bathing the port and the cruise ships in a mesmerising blue glow. There is plenty to discover on land as well. 'Egypt – Gods. Humans. Pharaohs. – Masterpieces of the Museum Egizio Turin' is the title of a compelling exhibition on Ancient Egyptian culture that will be presented against the industrial backdrop of the Völklingen Ironworks, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The exhibition in the Blasting Hall, which runs from 25 July 2014 to 22 February 2015, features around 250 high-calibre exhibits that are on display for the first time in Germany. They give a fascinating insight into various aspects of Ancient Egyptian culture over four millennia, such as art, the worship of gods and everyday life.

Besides the Völklingen Ironworks in the Saarland there are 38 other outstanding UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany that are just waiting to be visited.

The town of Worms, associated with the saga of the Nibelungs, will be celebrating the biggest wine festival and volksfest on the Rhine from 30 August to 7 September 2014. The Backfisch Festival features many exciting events but also honours old-established traditions. The Worms Fishermen's Guild, the oldest guild in Germany, is, as usual, at the heart of the festival. For the nine fun-packed days, people young and old will be gathering at the Kisselswiese festival grounds to take part in the opening celebrations, to soak up the atmosphere, to marvel at the fireworks, and, of course, to enjoy the cosy ambience in the seasonal wine rooms and sample local wines.

The Constance Lake Night Festival (Seenachtfest) has been running for over 65 years, during which time it has established cult status, and deservedly so. The 2014 edition of this venerable open-air event takes place on 9 August, offering a diverse line-up of live music spread across six stages. And with over 50 food and drink stalls, there's something for everyone, whether young or old . Extra entertainment comes courtesy of street performers and circus acts, while the carefully devised programme of family activities will put smiles on the little ones' faces.

A highlight of spectacular proportions is the traditional fireworks display above Lake Constance – not to be missed!

At the 38th session of the UNESCO World Heritage committee, which was held in Doha, the Imperial Abbey of Corvey in North Rhine-Westphalia became the 39th site in Germany to be awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. It is a title of which Corvey Palace in Höxter, idyllically located in the Teutoburg Forest, can be justifiably proud. The committee considered the 9th century Carolingian westwork of the former imperial abbey and the Civitas Corvey, an excavated town, to be of exceptional historical importance and universal value to mankind.
