At 4pm on 29 November, a trumpet fanfare from the tower marks the official opening of Chemnitz's Christmas market. Then, at 2pm on 1 December, the grand miners' parade ushers in the festive season. The city centre is transformed into a winter wonderland, with more than 200 stalls and various Erzgebirge traditions. These include a five-storey Christmas pyramid, a traditional festive arch, a giant musical box, incense burners, rocking horse figures and nutcrackers. Roll back the centuries at the medieval market (Innere Klosterstrasse), where artisans, entertainers, fire eaters and musicians await you, all in historical costume. On display at Lichtenstein Palace are 140 Nativity scenes from 33 countries and four continents.
