Rautenstrauch Joest Museum Cologne – Cultures of the World

This museum, a recipient of the Council of Europe's Museum Prize, provides compelling insights into worlds old and new, alien and familiar. The 3,600-square-metre space boasts an innovative exhibition concept that visitors can experience with all their senses.

The innovative exhibition concept at the Rautenstrauch Joest Museum addresses themes that affect us all, no matter where in the world we live, yet are only ever considered from our own perspective, shaped by our location and cultural background. "Living", "Faith" and "Identity" are all issues that affect each and every one of us. And visitors to the museum will be able to see the wealth of different approaches to these common issues in cultures around the world. The themed presentation called "Comprehending the World" provides an insight into the European view of other cultures, as reflected in travel reports, artwork and museum exhibitions.

"Shaping the World" is another themed presentation that takes a closer look at different ways of living. What made living in a tepee so practical? Why do the Maori people have tattoos? What is the purpose of ancestral figures? Comparing cultures to discern where they overlap and differ is at the heart of this modern exhibition that is fun, makes you want to find out more and encourages us all to be more tolerant. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–6 pm, Thursday: 10 am–8 pm
