Steigenberger’s green conscience
When the Steigenberger Hotel Am Kanzleramt opened in Berlin on 1 May 2014, it became both the group’s seventh establishment in the German capital and probably Germany’s most sustainable conference hotel. The Steigenberger Hotel Am Kanzleramt is set at the very heart of Berlin. Developed by the Frankfurt-based Steigenberger Group over the past few months, it has now become the company’s new flagship establishment and a project that amply demonstrates its green credentials. Facilities include CO2-neutral energy supply and “Green Meeting” conference programmes. Since January 2014, the hotel has been managed by Torsten K. Schulze, who also acts as Area General Manager for Berlin and Corporate Responsibility Representative for the implementation of Steigenberger’s sustainability programme in accordance with the Environmental Management Standard ISO 14001:2009. Mr. Schulze is supported in his task by three colleagues who have undergone special training to become certified auditors for the standard.“The idea of being green has long since been one of Steigenberger’s guiding principles”, said Schulze. “It is an established part of our corporate culture and an essential element of staff management across the group.” The certification process for the DIN EN ISO 14001 Environmental Standard has now been completed at virtually all of the group’s companies in Europe and has been successfully implemented at 57 establishments. As well as putting its faith in traditional environmental management, Steigenberger has become the first hotel chain to have its own beehives.
