Active holidaymakers with a love of the great outdoors will be in their element in Germany's newest national park. Located at the heart of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, this exceptionally beautiful upland landscape with its beech trees, wildcats and mystical moors offers fantastic walking and cycling trails.
The park, which covers parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland, features a large number of rocky outcrops and weathered boulders that give it a wild and rugged feel. If you'd like to know more about these natural phenomena, you can go on a discovery tour in the company of a certified park ranger.
Exercise and adventure in the great outdoors
The Hunsrück region is a walker's paradise. The 410km Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a particularly popular panorama trail that features idyllic lakes, enchanting valleys and magnificent vistas. If you would rather explore the landscape by bike, you could try the new national park cycling route that runs for 80 kilometres between Nonnweiler and Mörschied.
Something for everyone
There's so much to see and do in the park. Animal lovers can follow the direct path to the ten-hectare enclosure to watch wildcats and even wolves. Geologists can embark on a tour of discovery along the German Gemstone Route. History fans can marvel at the hillfort in Otzenhausen and other relics from Celtic times. And film buffs can go in search of the locations where the award-winning 'Heimat' trilogy was shot.
