Berlin has many faces – as a capital in the heart of Europe with a diverse history between east and west at its centre, it has emerged as a city of fashion, art and design, showing the trends of tomorrow, and as a film capital that has attracted international stars on red carpets and on sets. Berlin pulses with its distinctive club and night life.
Culture: a high standard of entertainment
Three opera houses and eight top-class symphony orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, as well as a further 150 theatres and stages guarantee good entertainment every evening. In the long line of theatre tradition, new trends are created continuously, encompassing the ancient tragedies, traditional Berlin farces or contemporary political theatre.
Art: world culture, history and contemporary
Around 180 museums, private collections, palaces and memorials record history, giving insight into various fields of knowledge and showing treasures of world culture. The Museum Island was put on the UNESCO world heritage list in 1999 as the largest museum ensemble in the world. In its five buildings there are over 6,000 years of art and cultural history on display.
Museums and memorials also look at Berlin’s history and show off fine art masterpieces as well as the work of contemporary artists. The UNESCO City of Design is a centre of creativity with around 440 galleries and private collections. Discovering Berlin on your own
Visitors to Berlin especially enjoy the indescribable, casual atmosphere of the German capital and the lifestyle its people enjoy. But there are some major highlights and attractions that every visitor to Berlin shouldn't miss under any circumstances.
Berlin's Top 5
It is the symbol of the city: the Brandenburg Gate. After starting here, it's easy enough to explore the city's most important sights on foot. The Reichstag, for example, with its glass dome, is not only the political centre of Germany, but also a magnet for tourists from all over the world with its magnificent 360° views of the city.
Then you should walk along the grand boulevard of Unter den Linden to the Museum Island, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to five unique museums exhibiting cultural treasures of world renown.
The tallest structure in Berlin, the TV Tower, promises fantastic views over the entire city, weather permitting, of course. Potsdamer Platz is where you might run into international stars and celebrities, and not just during the city's film festivals. The contemporary architecture inspires awe in all who visit.
Major fashion brands and individual shops have also made Berlin a fashion capital. The narrow streets and hidden courtyards around Hackescher Markt or along glamorous Friedrichstraße are great places to shop or just take a stroll.
The sights of Berlin can be easily seen by foot, bus, bike or even from the water.
Berlin – the green metropolis
Environmental awareness shapes the lifestyle in Berlin and ensures that the residents and guests of the city feel that it is a very pleasant city to live in.
Well-maintained green spaces, urban gardens and extensive parks allow Berlin’s visitors to relax and enjoy the quiet. Visitors can walk through the spacious Tiergarten (Berlin’s largest park), marvel at the exotic flowers in Gärten der Welt (Gardens of the World) or plant some themselves in the Prinzessinnengarten (Princess Gardens).
Green on the go
Guests can have a feast without having a guilty conscience with the creative cuisine and natural ingredients on offer in both upscale restaurants as well as trendy bars in the city. The most modern hotels in Europe can be found in Berlin, so it’s no surprise that there are also lots of houses that fit in with the new trend of natural materials and sustainability.
Visitors can get around all of Berlin day or night without having to drive by using the exemplary transport system. A trip on a solar boat or canoe on the river Spree offers an entirely new view of the city. Those who are staying in the city for several days can make use of the Berlin WelcomeCard, which enables you to use public transport all around the city and also provides discounts at around 200 tourist attractions.
Berlin Green Meetings
"Berlin Green Meetings" is an online platform that supports organisers in the planning and realisation of their sustainable and green events. Organisers of meetings, incentives, conventions and events can choose a partner from the registered providers.
