Sister cities on the Weser:
History and maritime flair in Bremen and Bremerhaven

Two cities – one state. The sister cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven dazzle visitors with exceptional worlds of discovery, maritime attractions, historical places of interest and a wealth of art and culture. Together Bremen and Bremerhaven form Germany's smallest federal state, yet they are bigger than most when it comes to innovation and quality of life.

Bremen, the cosmopolitan city on the Weser river, looks back on 1,200 years of history. Two of the city's most famous landmarks – forming a joint UNESCO World Heritage site – are the magnificent Weser-Renaissance town hall and the grand old statue of Roland on the historical market square. Bremen's emblem is the much-loved statue of the Town Musicians with the donkey, dog, cat and rooster from the Brothers Grimm fairytale.

The port city of Bremerhaven is located at the mouth of the river Weser on the North Sea. It offers an authentic maritime experience with its huge ocean liners, international docks, delicious seafood and centre for offshore wind energy. Pioneering museums and attractions, such as the German National Maritime Museum, Klimahaus® Bremerhaven 8° Ost and the German Emigration Centre add to Bremerhaven's appeal.

Whether it's ‘Knowledge Worlds‘, science centres or windows into groundbreaking technologies, the Bremen and Bremerhaven region boasts numerous projects that prove science is anything but boring: the interactive exhibitions and themed attractions in both cities engage with visitors and make learning a fun, hands-on experience.

It's well worth discovering Bremen and Bremerhaven – the sister cities on the Weser. And a long list of exciting events and special exhibitions makes them a fantastic travel destination at any time of year.

A world of knowledge and discovery in Bremen and Bremerhaven.

Twenty science centres and museums, eleven in Bremen and nine in Bremerhaven, offer fascinating insights into the universe and the plant and animal kingdom, into distant and local cultures, into the oceans of the world and the ports of Germany. They feature penguins and polar bears, show climate scenarios, and boast climbing walls and halfpipes. These 'knowledge worlds' inspire a passion for discovery and a thirst for adventure, educating and entertaining in equal measure. They tell us about the world we live in and how it works, how it used to work, how it could work and what we should change.

Learning can be so much fun – try it out!

The knowledge worlds in Bremen are the Universum Bremen, the Ethnological Museum, botanika, the Focke Museum, the Werder Bremen 'Wuseum', the Speicher XI Dockland Museum, the House of Science, the Hospital Museum, the Sportgarten sports park, the Spicarium with the Schulschiff Deutschland tall ship, and the Valentin U-boat pen.

The knowledge worlds in Bremerhaven are Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8°Ost, the German Emigration Centre, the Zoo am Meer, the German Maritime Museum, the Historical Museum, the 'U-Boat Wilhelm Bauer' Technology Museum, the FMF Gera museum ship, the Phänomenta science centre, and the two sightseeing coach tours HafenBus (of the port) and Tour de Wind (focused on wind energy).
