Schleswig-Holstein House Schwerin

This distinguished old brick house built in 1737 in the Baroque style is open to visitors as an exhibition and events centre. It is home to a collection of sculptures, photographs and paintings.

The exhibitions at the culture forum, located in Schwerin's idyllic Old Town, centre around 20th-century art. Local artists are given the recognition they deserve alongside global greats such as Dalí, Ernst, Matisse, Miró, Hundertwasser, Janssen and Goya. In the "Literature" section, Mecklenburg authors are introduced and author reading events are hosted. There is also a display dedicated to Adolf Jöhnssen, a graphic artist who was born in Rostock and illustrated works by John Brinckman, for example.

Mecklenburg's landscape has inspired many artists from the local area and farther afield, as the artists' colonies in Ahrenshoop and Schwaan reveal. The exhibition at Schleswig-Holstein House offers an insight into the history of art in Mecklenburg and Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries by presenting some major proponents. A printing workshop has recently been added to the historical shed in the stunning gardens, where guided tours and workshop sessions are offered. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 11 am–6 pm
