Düsseldorf Art Hall

The outside of the Düsseldorf Art Hall is widely regarded as one of the most stunning examples of Brutalist architecture. And the temporary exhibitions on contemporary art are a sight to behold on the inside.

Joseph Beuys would have loved to have the building demolished, but today the Brutalist architecture is seen as visionary. The Art Hall and Art Association for Rhineland and Westphalia have both resided in the building on Grabbeplatz as independent institutions since it was officially opened. The Art Hall stands out from all the other museums in Düsseldorf in terms of its external appearance and its conceptual direction. Without a collection of its own, it still manages to put on elaborate displays on movements and trends in contemporary art. Pioneering exhibitions have been held here, including the "Prospect" series between 1968 and 1976.

Architect Konrad Beckmann designed the building, which has a simple layout and large exhibition rooms dedicated to Düsseldorf movements and talented young artists as well as global trends and big names. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday and public holidays: 11 am–6 pm
