Museum of City History Freiburg

Located in the Late-Baroque residence of artist Johann Christian Wentzinger, this museum in Freiburg is home to treasures spanning 900 years of the city's history.

The museum's exhibition provides an overview of Freiburg im Breisgau's history from its origins in around 1100 to the Baroque era. For example, visitors can see what Freiburg used to look like in 1600 with its medieval walls and city gates and in 1700 within its Baroque star-shaped fortification. There is also a model of the cathedral construction site in the museum's salon.

The founding of the city by the House of Zähringen, monasteries and foundations, crafts and coinage are further aspects covered by the museum. And we mustn't forget that the artist's house is a special attraction in its own right. It still holds a large number of works by Johann Christian Wentzinger, including the "Four Centuries" sandstone sculptures from the gardens of Ebnet Castle. Having officially opened its doors in 1994, the Museum of City History is part of the Augustiner Museum. It is no exaggeration to say that it has a treasure trove of exhibits at its disposal. Visitors with a keen interest will be excited to learn that the museum offers special themed guided tours. Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday: 10 am–5 pm
