Bad Gandersheim, situated between the Harz mountains and the Weserbergland hills, provides a stunning backdrop for the Gandersheim Cathedral Festival, which is held in the town centre every summer. The long-established open-air theatre used for the event is one of the largest in Lower Saxony. Continuing until 19 August 2012, the festival offers a varied programme in a historical setting.
