German youth hostels are becoming increasingly popular with families. The German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) has reported that families now account for just under one fifth of all overnight stays – and in some federal states such as Rhineland-Palatinate and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania almost a third.

The reasons for this growing popularity are manifold: most youth hostels are situated in an attractive location and offer good value for money and family-friendly services – often with leisure activities for younger guests and other children of the same age to play with. What's more, many hostels have been renovated in recent years and now offer greater comfort. The informal and cosmopolitan feel of youth hostels not only appeals to families however. Youth hostels are also a popular choice for young people, groups and people with restricted mobility.
