Brandenburg is renowned as the state of nature, water and cultural heritage. The region is full of palaces and parks, stately homes and gardens. Amongst them is the most famous Palace of Sanssouci. The picturesque castle with its fountains and vineyard terraces is part of Europe’s most significant and extensive park areas that it also hosts the Neues Palais, which is the last large castle complex in Prussian baroque style. Throughout the year, the cultural heritage is highlighted with concerts and performances such as the Potsdamer Schlössernacht (Night of the Palaces). The person who designed Sanssouci Palace was no one less than Prussian king Frederick the Great himself. Frederick was the happiest during his newlywed life at Rheinsberg Palace, an imposing town surrounded by lakes of the Ruppin region. If you are interested in the European history Brandenburg will not disappoint you: there are many stunning places ranging from royal palaces, gothic churches and monasteries, to GDR-heritage and industrial culture. Apart of the palaces and gardens film-making has a long tradition in Brandenburg’s capital. It started in the 1920s when great movie stars like Marlene Dietrich produced movies here in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Today, national and international productions such as Inglourious Basterds by Tarantino are shot in Europe’s oldest film complex. Further Highlights: The Tree-Top Path in Beelitz-Heilstätten, Art Museum Barberini and the Cecilienhof Palace in Potsdam, where the Potsdam Conference took place in the summer of 1945, also attract visitors. Since 2022, Potsdam has been one attraction richer: DAS MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam, where modern and contemporary art is on display.

As Brandenburg is renowned for its access to open landscape and to water, outdoor activities enjoy a great reputation. Anyone who wants to explore the state by bicycle can choose between ca. 7,000 kilometers of cycle paths along rivers like Havel, Oder, and Spree or through forests: all the routes can be planned to suit personal preferences, physical fitness and time. The topography is ideal for cyclists: Brandenburg mainly offers flat countryside, a number of idyllic nature reserves and a multitude of lakes and rivers. Famous paths include Berlin to Copenhagen, which connects the two capitals (www.bike-berlin-copenhagen.com) and the Oder-Neiße path where Europe’s latest meadow landscape awaits you (www.oderneisse-radweg.deFinally, anyone who would like to combine two activities at a time has a smooth run on the “Fläming-Skate”. The wonderfully asphalted Fläming inline skating path leading through “Baruth Urstromtal” and “Niederer Fläming” (the Lower Fläming) is 100km in length and 3m in width offering cyclists and skaters best conditions for intense legwork (www.flaeming-skate.deThe fascinating waterways of the Spreewald have ceased to be the exclusive preserve of canoeists. A must for every visitor is a punt trip through the idyllic Spreewald or “Venice of Brandenburg”: an atmospheric and secretive labyrinth consisting of thousands of small and larger waterways. Sailing enthusiasts feel perfectly at home on the Scharmützelsee at the traditional spa resort of Bad Saarow. Houseboat fans can travel several hundred kilometers without any need for a driving license. www.brandenburg-tourism.com
