Saarland - a small jewel in the heart of Europe

The Saarland has a unique location embedded between three countries: To the south-west lies France, its westerly tip touches Luxembourg and to the north-east is Rhineland-Palatinate.

No other German region has undergone such changes of allegiance during the past 200 years – at one time French, later an autonomous region and then again under German rule. However, the historical evidence found in the region takes us back a lot further: The Roman villa in Borg, for instance, an original reconstruction of a Roman estate, is an impressive reminder of the way people lived in Europe during the time of the Romans.

The most recent history of the region, however, the period of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), is almost a thing of the past. The most important example of the Saarland's industrial heritage is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte, the world's only remaining ironworks dating from the heyday of the iron and steel industries.
Saarland's varied natural landscape is best discovered on foot or by bike, for example by walking the Saar-Hunsrück trail or taking part in a gourmet bike tour.

Fascination: UNESCO World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte
The World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte (Völklingen Ironworks), a monument to the Industrial Age, is a gigantic steelworks dating from the heyday of the iron industry, and is among the most unusual of the UNESCO Heritage Sites.

Benedictine Abbey Tholey and church windows by Gerhard Richter
In the north of the Saarland lies the Benedictine Abbey of Tholey. It is considered the oldest monastery in Germany. On display are 30 windows by the Afghan artist Mahbuba Maqsoodi. The design of the three choir windows is a gift from Gerhard Richter, the most influential living artist of our time.

A World of Experience by Villeroy & Boch
Take a journey into the world of ceramics…
Inside the imposing Baroque-style building of the Alte Abtei (Old Abbey), headquarters of lifestyle company Villeroy & Boch, over 270 years of company history come to life. The Discovery Centre housing historic china and modern tableware as well as the Ceramics Museum ensure an unforgettable visit. Purchase your favourite designs at the Villeroy & Boch Outlet Center in the same location.

Roman Villa Borg
Hot on the heels of the Romans…
The villa in Borg is an impressive example of how the Romans lived about 2,000 years ago. The reconstructed 'Villa Rustica' in Perl-Borg gives an insight into how members of the Roman gentry went about their daily life. The grand manor houses an archaeological museum containing many original finds and replicas. The estate with its outbuildings and the luxurious spa house, provides a unique insight into the splendours of that period.

Saarbrücken - Urban flair with great charm
Saarbrücken is one of the "small" of Germany's major cities, which makes the state capital pleasantly manageable and appealing. The baroque buildings of the master builder Friedrich Joachim Stengel still characterize the city center today: Saarbrücken Castle with its forecourt ensemble, the Ludwig Church and the St. Johanner Market are among the must-sees of a visit. A special tip: Via the Saar Historical Museum, you can reach the underground castle located 14 meters below the Schlossplatz - a sight unique in Germany.

Cycling
If you‘re cycling you can choose your level of activity, from gentle routes along the Saar, the Moselle and the Blies or across the border to France or Luxembourg, or for more of a challenge, the vineyards and the heights of the Hochwald. The Saarland has everything you could want for leisure cycling, multi-day trips and more challenging cycling.
