'Em Golde Kappes' Früh brewhouse in Cologne

Kölsch beer. A Cologne classic.

Over 3,300 pubs, clubs and restaurants in Cologne will serve you a refreshing kölsch. This top-fermented beer is traditionally served in 0.2-litre glasses, or stangen, so the waiter, known locally as the köbes, is kept very busy if you're thirsty. It's a great way to experience Cologne hospitality. Just don't ask for a pils.

Upheaval and avant garde, form and functionality, rigour and beauty: modernism is a broad term that has shaped an entire century and remains influential today. Hardly any other museum has concentrated as exclusively on this era as Cologne's Ludwig Museum, whose collection starts in the early 20th century and traces developments right to the present day in remarkable breadth and depth.

The history of this fascinating museum, which together with the Philharmonic Hall has occupied an architecturally striking building right next to Cologne Cathedral since 1986, began with Peter and Irene Ludwig's endowment of around 350 works of modern art. Within a few decades, it had grown into the biggest collection of Pop Art outside the USA including Roy Lichtenstein's Maybe and Andy Warhol's Brillo Boxes. In addition to the Pop Art, today it owns the third-largest Picasso collection worldwide and an extensive collection of Russian avant garde from before and after the revolution, as well as important works of German Expressionism and Surrealism. Artistic movements such as Bauhaus and De Stijl, Nouveau Réalisme and Fluxus bring us to the contemporary art which the museum resolutely acquired, the most recent piece never being more than a few months old. German art of the 1970s and 1980s and installations by the younger avant garde therefore also found their way into the Ludwig Museum, completing the survey of the intriguing era of modernism through contemporary works.

Christopher Street Day (CSD) and ColognePride bring colourful parades, extravagant outfits and fever-pitch excitement to the streets – a huge, vibrant festival enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people but with a very serious message. Every year, when gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders descend on Cologne with their high spirits and good humour, they are demonstrating for homosexuals' rights and for acceptance, tolerance and equality.

It was back in 1972 that the first demonstrations for the rights of lesbians, gays and transgenders took place in this liberal-minded cathedral city in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Christopher Street Day parade has been organised by Kölner Lesben- und Schwulentag e.V. (KLuST) every year since 1991, partly in memory of the events in Christopher Street in New York in 1969, partly focusing on the future and the continuing improvement in the social and political status of sexual minorities. At first, Gay Pride and the street festival only attracted around 3,000 lesbians and gays to the historical old quarter, but in the last few years up to 1.2 million visitors have gathered in Cologne. Now ColognePride spans four main events: the weekend street festival around Alter Markt, Heumarkt and Rathausplatz, the Friday AIDS-Hilfe gala at Hotel Maritim, the Colour Cologne Party in the Lanxess Arena and the grand parade through the city centre featuring up to 120 floats and countless groups. This is a festival for everyone because sexual orientation has no relevance in matters of tolerance, humanity, joy and equal rights.
