Miniature Wonderland, Hamburg – a small world that makes a big impression

There's only one way to describe Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg: the biggest model railway in the world. Visitors are taken on a journey through different countries and continents, through realistic miniature landscapes and worlds of fantasy.

Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg portrays stories big and small. There are discoveries to be made everywhere you look. From Hamburg with its port, it's just a few short steps to the Grand Canyon, intersected by a long-haul train crossing a huge wooden bridge. The America section takes you on a sightseeing tour of the United States, from the Everglades to the bright lights of Vegas and into the Rocky mountains. Then it's onwards to Scandinavia, where cargo ships and cruise liners sail through 30,000 litres of real water and you can see Pippi Longstocking and a family of cave-dwelling trolls. This region also boasts a magical snowy landscape with lots of minute details. The make-believe city of Knuffingen is another must-see with tiny lorries and cars driving through the little streets as if by magic. And it doesn't end there. Other highlights include a rock concert, a fire brigade, a couple in a field of sunflowers and even the mythical Atlantis. Of course, as well as the Alps, Scandinavia, America and Switzerland, you also get to explore the beautiful city of Hamburg in miniature.

Highlights

Miniature Wonderland is the world's biggest model railway. The 2,300m² air-conditioned exhibition space features around 400,000 tiny figures meticulously positioned across eight different regions, over 1,300 trains and approximately 20,000 metres of track, more than 500,000 lights and 10,000 moving cars, day and night simulations every 15 minutes, and flight simulations, all controlled by more than 64 computers. And you are regularly met by spectacular views overlooking the entire miniature landscape. You can discover the model railway in a small group or in an intimate atmosphere at events such as Nights in Wonderland or on a Behind the Scenes guided tour, giving you the chance to appreciate the tiniest details and gain insider knowledge. By arrangement, wheelchair users and severely disabled people can enjoy exclusive access to Miniature Wonderland.

Events

There is no doubt that the three buildings belonging to the Hamburg Kunsthalle house one of the most important public art collections in Germany: perhaps the best place to discover connections, developments and trends in seven centuries of art history. The permanent exhibition of more than 700 works and alternating displays from the museum's holdings offer a unique insight into art from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Every one of the museum's collections is important in its own right but in combination they have an immense impact. The museum presents the medieval altars of Master Bertram and Master Francke, 17th century Dutch paintings and 19th century German paintings with extensive groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann. Works of the Classical Modernist period include paintings and sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz and Max Ernst. The contemporary art section features alternating exhibitions, which have included Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Mona Hatoum and Jenny Holzer. The Department of Prints and Drawings comprises more than 120,000 works and is a museum in its own right. The Kunsthalle also runs the 'Museum At Home' initiative where art historians give their expert opinion on paintings (on canvas and wood), drawings and prints for a small fee.

The people of Hamburg know how to party. Not once but three times a year they team up with visitors for northern Germany's biggest funfair – which lasts a whole 30 days. For almost a month in spring, summer and winter, people flock to Heiligengeistfeld in Hamburg to enjoy fairground rides, food and drink, and shows. There are reduced prices for families on Wednesdays – and attention turns skywards on Fridays for the massive fireworks display.

Founded in 1996 as a 'Hamburg cycle race for pros and amateurs', Germany's biggest cycling event more than lives up to its name and has become a true classic in the cycling calendar.

It is always an impressive sight to see the seemingly endless stream of 20,000 amateur cyclists sweeping through the streets of Hamburg before heading into the area surrounding the city. A staggering 800,000 spectators fill the city centre, which is a sight in itself. Before the pros gets under way, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the entertainment programme held around the Jungfernstieg promenade and town hall. There is also a small consumer fair with around 80 stalls where visitors can browse, test and purchase all the latest cycling products. Since Jan Ullrich won here in 1997, the race has become a top event in professional circles; the International Cycling Union (UCI) has hailed the Cyclassics as one of the leading one-day cycling races in the world. It is now the only professional race in Germany to be included in the highest category of the UCI World Tour. So it comes as no surprise that the best racing teams in the world regularly appear here – and that alone is a reason not to miss this thrilling event. It's also a great opportunity to experience how friendly the people of Hamburg really are.
