Welfenspeise dessert was invented in Hannover

Welfenspeise. A dessert fit for royalty.

The welfenspeise dessert was first made by a Hanoverian chef for the bicentenary of the House of Guelph's ascension to the throne. Its yellow and white represent the Guelph's family colours. This two-layered dessert of vanilla custard and wine syllabub is said to have been Elector Ernst August's favourite sweet. Today welfenspeise can be found on the menu in many restaurants and is a firm favourite at family celebrations in and around Hannover.

Üritused

World-class art is on show at the Sprengel Museum, which opened in 1979 in Lower Saxony's regional capital Hannover. It ranks as one of the major museums of 20th and 21st century art, with German Expressionism and French modernism particularly well represented. Additions to its collection in recent decades reflect the key movements in modern art – from Kurt Schwitters to Niki de Saint Phalle.

The museum's foundation dates back to a gift from Margit and Bernhard Sprengel, who donated their extensive modern art collection to the city of Hannover in 1969. Hannover's existing 20th century art collections were also moved to the new Museum of Modern Art building, which was renamed Sprengel Museum Hannover in 1984. Comprehensive collections of the works of artists such as Paul Klee, Emil Nolde and Max Beckmann, and the Brücke and Blue Rider schools are featured. In the year 2000 one of the 20th century's most influential artists Niki de Saint Phalle donated to the museum more than 400 works representing all the major phases of her creative career.

Festival Theaterformen is an annual event alternating between Braunschweig and Hannover in Lower Saxony.

The aim of the festival is to outline the current state of international theatre and offer new thought-provoking ideas – an ambitious mission statement that is reflected in the festival's programme. So in addition to theatre productions by international artists, discussions between artists and audiences at events such as the festival breakfast are also an integral part of the festival.

The Schützenfest fair in Hannover ranks as the biggest of its kind in the world.

For ten days, over 250 fairground rides, carousels, try-your-luck stalls and drinks stands transform the capital of Lower Saxony into one gigantic funfair. The highlight is the riflemen's parade when more than 10,000 riflemen, dancers, artistes and entertainers together with numerous magnificent floats form a twelve-kilometre procession that makes its way through the city centre.
