Berlin Cathedral

Berlin Cathedral – a mighty church and the final resting place of the electoral family of Hohenzollern

It embodies power, religion and spirituality: Berlin Cathedral on Museum Island in the heart of the historic capital wows visitors with more than just its glorious appearance. Berlin's largest church represents 500 years of history in Brandenburg and Prussia, and is renowned as one of the most important dynastic burial sites in Germany.

Berlin Cathedral polarises opinion. Some call it glorious with its Baroque palace architecture on the outside and its lavish furnishings on the inside. While others find it gaudy and struggle with its opulence, especially given that Berlin Cathedral is the central hub of the German Evangelical church and its walls are adorned with figures of the four reformers: Luther, Melanchthon, Zwingli and Calvin.

In any case, the historic importance of Berlin Cathedral as a burial site for the electoral family of Hohenzollern is beyond any doubt. 94 burials were held here over five centuries; the flamboyant sarcophagi and gravestones attest to this. Founded in 1465, Berlin Cathedral converted to Lutheranism in 1539. The new cathedral with its imposing architecture – a mixture of Italian Neo-Renaissance and Baroque – was consecrated in 1905. The 70 metre tall dome and the magnificent altar with its unique stained-glass windows are striking. The Baptismal and Matrimonial Chapel's ceremonial atmosphere provides an oasis of silence and calm. The views of Museum Island, the Reichstag government building, the Rotes Rathaus town hall, the New Synagogue and the city itself from the dome walkway are unbeatable, even though you have to climb 270 steps for this reward.

Located in Berlin Mitte, the very heart of the capital, the Hackesche Höfe complex is Germany's largest series of enclosed courtyards and one of Berlin's main attractions. This is where you will find the atmospheric Chamäleon Theatre, a charming venue whose historical, art nouveau concert hall goes hand in hand with superb cuisine and the latest in stage technology. It is the perfect setting for variety, cabaret and events that are out of the ordinary.

Walking into the Hackesche Höfe, with its maze of interconnected courtyards and artistically significant historical façades, feels like stepping back into turn-of-the-century Berlin. This magnificent structure was originally opened in 1906 and comprehensively renovated in 1994. Today, it is an ideal home for the Chamäleon Theatre and its premium entertainment format, which combines different artistic genres and innovative programming to make it a pioneering force in German theatre and variety. The theatre's former ballroom was lovingly restored in 2004/2005 and – thanks to its glamorous art nouveau features and wonderful ambience – is one of Berlin's loveliest auditoriums. Behind the scenes, however, there is nothing but the very latest in technology. High-end lighting and sound systems ensure maximum visual and acoustic pleasure, and an adaptable stage system accommodates a wide variety of stage designs. Even the seating within the auditorium can be changed as required to suit the audience's needs. A well-stocked bar and excellent cuisine served by the partner restaurant 'al dente' round off the bill nicely, guaranteeing theatre-goers the perfect culinary accompaniment to a fine evening's entertainment.

The "loveliest variety theatre in Europe", a "variety gem", "probably the most beautiful auditorium in Berlin" – just some of the rave reviews given to the Wintergarten in Berlin. This charming music, variety and show theatre, which reopened in 2009 under the same name as its internationally acclaimed forebear, is continuing a tradition of great entertainment with a wonderful, diverse programme. This is where locals and visitors pass beneath the legendary star-studded canopy and enter into an atmospheric world of mirrors, wood and dark red velvet.

At the Wintergarten, the stage is set for the best that variety has to offer – from Meret Becker to the Tiger Lillies, from Max Raabe to Eckart von Hirschhausen, from new talents to international stars. It's all part of a great tradition dating back to 1887, when the original Wintergarten variety theatre wowed audiences on Friedrichstrasse, in the Berlin-Mitte quarter, until its demise in 1944.The theatre was relaunched on Potsdamer Strasse in 1992, but the curtain went up for the final time in January 2009, despite the venue's great popularity. By February 2010, however, this wonderful institution's name was once more up in lights, and the new Wintergarten opened its doors with a glittering premiere of the 'Great Variety Show', a homage to the genre's illustrious past. Since then, three lavish, inhouse variety shows have been playing to audiences all year round and the theatre has re-booted the classic dining theatre concept with its own contemporary take: Show and Dine. Whether you feel like a light bite or a three-course meal, a bottle of wine, glass of champagne or a cocktail, the Wintergarten will have just the thing to add some sparkle to your evening.
