The Room of Silence in Brandenburg Gate

The Room of Silence – a place of reflection open to all in the heart of Berlin

The Room of Silence in Brandenburg Gate is a tranquil oasis in the heart of Berlin. It is a place to take pause, have a moment of contemplation and find yourself. A historic site to be at peace – with yourself and the world.

The people of East Berlin had a vision to create an open space for all, regardless of their world view and religion, a year before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The vision became reality six years later, on 27 October 1994. In a place where the division of the city and the world was omnipresent, where the border between power blocs and ideologies had run since 1945, at the interface between East and West: Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. A 30 m² space, plain, unadorned. A woven tapestry on the theme of "light that penetrates the darkness", the only element to turn visitors' heads, prompts people to stay and lose themselves in their thoughts.

This is a place of silence and peace where the installations in the vestibule epitomise the intention in writing and art. It is a meeting place to encounter history and find yourself. To meditate, connect with your inner self and ask for more tolerance between people, a successful coexistence and a peaceful future.
