Aachen Printen gingerbread. Famed for its flavour.

Aachen Printen gingerbread. Famed for its flavour.

Tales of emperors, an almighty blaze and even the devil surround this baked treat. One thing's for certain. Printen is a gingerbread that can be hard or soft depending on how much honey is in the recipe. Whatever the texture, it always tastes heavenly, especially when topped with nuts, almonds or cherries. Printen came into being when Napoleon cut mainland Europe off from imported sugar supplies. The bakers sweetened the dough with sugar beet syrup, giving Aachen Printen its distinctive flavour.

Events

Over two weekends, the CHIO (Concours Hippique International Officiel) transforms the city of Aachen in North Rhine-Westphalia into the setting for the world's biggest equestrian festival.

The event features approximately 500 horses and 300 riders, drivers and vaulters from more than 20 countries. The first weekend is particularly attractive for families. It traditionally includes the 'Horse and symphony' concert and an open day on 'Soers Sunday' featuring a varied programme of sports and show events.
