"Germany for the Jewish Traveler"

This industrial city possessed one of the most beautiful synagogues in Germany that survived the fires of Kristallnacht, but its interior was destroyed. In 1980, the Old Essen Synagogue re-opened as a municipal museum of the history of Essen Jewry. Today’s Jewish Community Center is built on the site of a prewar Jewish youth center. The dome of its new Synagogue has unusual acoustics so that a whisper anywhere in the sanctuary can be heard throughout the edifice.
