Blades have been made in Solingen since 1363 – and the manufacturing of knives and scissors has been the city's bread and butter ever since. This branch of industry flourished here thanks to the nearby streams and rivers that powered the mills. Though the energy comes from alternative sources these days, the craft is still alive and well and the high quality of Solingen blades is recognised the world over. The city's industrial museum gives an overview of nearly 700 years of knife production.
