Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium – exotic adventures await!

Discover a world of natural wonders at Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium in Hamburg. Embark on an exciting expedition that takes in the deepest tropical seas, ancient forests and mysterious caves and grottoes.

In its centenary year, Hamburg's Hagenbeck Zoo opened a sensational new attraction and visitor experience – Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium. The environment is kept hot and humid in the three levels of this tropical world, in which around 14,300 animals from 400 species live in 27 different aquariums. Africa, Asia and South America – you explore three continents and their flora and fauna on paths that twist and turn through the Tropical World. Everything is perfectly designed, just like on a film set. Lush vegetation, brightly coloured birds and lively lemurs: wherever you go animals are chirping, warbling, scuttling and scurrying. Exotic plants grow in abandoned villages, snakes and lizards dart through the undergrowth, lemurs scamper across the Madagascan village square, huge crocodiles lurk on the lakeshore and exotic birds fly through the tropical skies. There is life wherever you look, including in an 'old tunnel' that leads to the mysterious Cave World with its bizarre-looking insects, frogs and bats. One path leads to a dark pond that is packed with piranhas. In the water lurks a green anaconda, the world's biggest snake. Delicate little birds such as the shining honeycreeper zip through the air, and every few steps offers something new. And if you think you've seen it all on your expedition through the tropical aquarium, you'd be wrong. Look again and you'll notice the amazing backdrops! Every visit to Hagenbeck Zoo presents a new opportunity to see birds and bats flying freely among the trees, to study the inhabitants of the caves in greater detail and to watch the many colourful fish and beautiful sea-going giants gliding through the water.

Highlights

For visitors large and small, the Underwater World is surely the biggest attraction at Hagenbeck Tropical Aquarium. Its gargantuan shark atoll, which holds almost two million litres of water, is among the largest in Europe. From behind a huge screen, just like in a cinema, you get to see groupers, humphead wrasses, zebra sharks and reef sharks swimming around a brilliantly coloured underwater world. But, of course, no film can produce anything quite as beautiful as Mother Nature herself.

There is no doubt that the three buildings belonging to the Hamburg Kunsthalle house one of the most important public art collections in Germany: perhaps the best place to discover connections, developments and trends in seven centuries of art history. The permanent exhibition of more than 700 works and alternating displays from the museum's holdings offer a unique insight into art from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Every one of the museum's collections is important in its own right but in combination they have an immense impact. The museum presents the medieval altars of Master Bertram and Master Francke, 17th century Dutch paintings and 19th century German paintings with extensive groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann. Works of the Classical Modernist period include paintings and sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz and Max Ernst. The contemporary art section features alternating exhibitions, which have included Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Mona Hatoum and Jenny Holzer. The Department of Prints and Drawings comprises more than 120,000 works and is a museum in its own right. The Kunsthalle also runs the 'Museum At Home' initiative where art historians give their expert opinion on paintings (on canvas and wood), drawings and prints for a small fee.

The people of Hamburg know how to party. Not once but three times a year they team up with visitors for northern Germany's biggest funfair – which lasts a whole 30 days. For almost a month in spring, summer and winter, people flock to Heiligengeistfeld in Hamburg to enjoy fairground rides, food and drink, and shows. There are reduced prices for families on Wednesdays – and attention turns skywards on Fridays for the massive fireworks display.

Founded in 1996 as a 'Hamburg cycle race for pros and amateurs', Germany's biggest cycling event more than lives up to its name and has become a true classic in the cycling calendar.

It is always an impressive sight to see the seemingly endless stream of 20,000 amateur cyclists sweeping through the streets of Hamburg before heading into the area surrounding the city. A staggering 800,000 spectators fill the city centre, which is a sight in itself. Before the pros gets under way, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the entertainment programme held around the Jungfernstieg promenade and town hall. There is also a small consumer fair with around 80 stalls where visitors can browse, test and purchase all the latest cycling products. Since Jan Ullrich won here in 1997, the race has become a top event in professional circles; the International Cycling Union (UCI) has hailed the Cyclassics as one of the leading one-day cycling races in the world. It is now the only professional race in Germany to be included in the highest category of the UCI World Tour. So it comes as no surprise that the best racing teams in the world regularly appear here – and that alone is a reason not to miss this thrilling event. It's also a great opportunity to experience how friendly the people of Hamburg really are.
