Not yet a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but well on its way to becoming one: Naumburg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul is one of the most important cathedrals of the High Middle Ages in Europe, with world-famous masterpieces housed on the Romanesque Road in the heart of Germany.
The most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages can be seen here with one of the most important women of that time: Uta of Naumburg and St. Elizabeth. The one-of-a-kind donor figures by the Naumburg Master in the western choir of the cathedral, including the beautiful aristocrat Uta of Naumburg, have become world famous.
St. Elizabeth of Thuringia's loving devotion to and sacrifice for the sick and the poor have immortalised her. Arguably the oldest visual depiction of her is hewn in stone in the Chapel of St. Elizabeth. Its head is used to hold relics of the saint. Scenes from her life have also been eternalised by Neo Rauch, a contemporary painter based in Leipzig, who created a series of works for the windows of the chapel. Lucas Cranach the Elder's altar wings, which feature paintings on both sides, and other sacred treasures dating back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance period, are stored in Naumburg Cathedral's treasury. They take visitors on a journey back to a fascinating past, which they can dream about in the cathedral garden and the Garden of the Naumburg Master, between the old ponds, gardens of the former canons' houses and local plant varieties which were used as inspiration to create the cathedral's 13th century friezes and capitals.
