Animal adventures at Hannover Zoo

In the city of Hannover, the African wilderness is just a short ride away on the no. 11 tram. India is nearby too, and right between them is Canada. A trip to Hannover Zoo, with its different themed lands, is like a trip around the world.

The 22 hectares of Hannover Zoo are home to more than 3,000 animals spread across seven spectacular themed lands: from Canada's Yukon Bay, populated by seals and polar bears, to the Indian Jungle Palace with its tigers, leopards and sacred grey langur monkeys, and the Australian Outback of kangaroos and emus. Things take a somewhat nostalgic turn in the rural idyll of Meyer's Farm with its rare domestic breeds. In the kaleidoscopic world of Mollywoop, kids can run around in a huge playground, speed down the rubber-ring slide and get up close to the animals at the petting zoo. There is never a dull moment here, thanks to a daily programme of exciting animal shows (including the elephant show and hunting and flying displays featuring the birds of prey), the feeding times with commentary, the themed restaurants and the ice cream factory. Other highlights include exciting scout tours, slides, climbing courses, huge adventure playgrounds and gold-panning. You'll find places to eat in nearly every part of the zoo – from a popcorn stand and an ice cream parlour to a range of self-service diners and a restaurant serving good old-fashioned dishes from the Lower Saxony region.

Highlights

Hannover Zoo has lots on offer for children. The new 'edutainment' stations, for example, help kids to learn as they play. Another highlight is the huge underwater world as seen from aboard the Yukon Queen. Thirty-nine panoramic windows provide an unrestricted view of the polar bears, seals and penguins below the water's surface. Hippos splash around to the right of the boat. At three o'clock it's time to feed the polar bears, with only a glass panel separating you from these furry giants. Sensational animal shows, themed restaurants and a boat trip down the Zambezi round off the perfect family day out. In winter the zoo holds a very special Christmas market, transforming the park into an enchanting winter wonderland with an excellent programme of festive events. Who ever said that Hannover was boring?

World-class art is on show at the Sprengel Museum, which opened in 1979 in Lower Saxony's regional capital Hannover. It ranks as one of the major museums of 20th and 21st century art, with German Expressionism and French modernism particularly well represented. Additions to its collection in recent decades reflect the key movements in modern art – from Kurt Schwitters to Niki de Saint Phalle.

The museum's foundation dates back to a gift from Margit and Bernhard Sprengel, who donated their extensive modern art collection to the city of Hannover in 1969. Hannover's existing 20th century art collections were also moved to the new Museum of Modern Art building, which was renamed Sprengel Museum Hannover in 1984. Comprehensive collections of the works of artists such as Paul Klee, Emil Nolde and Max Beckmann, and the Brücke and Blue Rider schools are featured. In the year 2000 one of the 20th century's most influential artists Niki de Saint Phalle donated to the museum more than 400 works representing all the major phases of her creative career.
