Once upon a time. This is how all fairy tales start, including the fairy-tale hike through the Spessart hills between Aschaffenburg and Gemünden am Main. After all, the seven dwarfs used to live beyond the many hills on this route.

Once you have hiked over the seven (or more) hills... Through idyllic meadows, ancient ravines and spectacular rock formations... Once you have passed many wonderful monasteries and castles... You come to Lohr am Main , where Snow White lived in the castle. Maria Sophia, the real-life Snow White, needed to escape her vain and arrogant stepmother Claudia Elisabeth. She fled through the forests of the Spessart hills and found the miners, most of whom were presumably small in stature and wore red pointed caps as part of their uniform. This is where Snow White took up residence, just as we do in the lodgings on our route. And if the miners are still alive today, then they will still be hiking... on the Spessart Hills Trail 1.

TIP: the Spessart Museum

Manuel Andrack, editor, presenter, author and hiking blogger:

"I recommend a visit to the Spessart Museum in Lohr. It houses a wealth of information on Snow White's life and visitors can ask the original magic mirror: 'Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest hiker of them all?' "
