Vendôme restaurant in Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg – what Goethe missed out on

The impressive panoramic view from Bensberg Palace in Bergisch Gladbach is said to have been admired by the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the 18th century. A five-star grand hotel now welcomes guests who appreciate the magnificent view of the cathedral city of Cologne at least as much. And the attractions don't end there. The hotel's Vendôme gourmet restaurant is ranked among the best in the world.

In the restaurant, Joachim Wissler, a leading light of "New German Cuisine", prepares a refreshingly different kind of cuisine, with imaginative creations spanning the full spectrum in terms of texture and temperature. Supported by his pastry chef Anne Kamp, he also caters ideally for sweet-toothed diners. In 2015, the Vendôme was number 30 in the ranking of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Today, Goethe would surely have more to admire than simply the view from the palace.
