The Franconian Water Cycle Route was recently opened in 2019. The route spanning 450 kilometres through the Franconian Lake District and its neighbouring areas allows tourists to explore small and idyllic Franconian towns such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber and enjoy a spot of swimming in the local lakes.
Water is at the heart of the Franconian Water Cycle Route, where it appears in all its forms: lakes, rivers, streams and canals. Gunzenhausen makes for an excellent place to start the loop. Passing Lake Altmühlsee, cyclists come to Dinkelsbühl and its pretty Old Town. Holidaymakers can also expect half-timbered buildings and Medieval architecture galore in Feuchtwangen and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. All three of these towns are part of the "Romantic Road", a popular tourist route. There are plenty of opportunities to go for a dip in the lake district. Cyclists can take their pick from Lake Rothsee and the Großer Brombachsee reservoir if they fancy trying their hand at standup paddleboarding. It should come as no surprise that traditional Franconian hospitality and regional specialities await all the way along the route.
