Dialogue Museum, Frankfurt – an insight into the unseen

The Dialogue Museum in Frankfurt offers an incredible experience for the senses. Its Dialogue in the Dark exhibition challenges sighted visitors to find their way in the pitch-black world that blind people inhabit, giving a taste of a life without vision. For children aged seven and above.

There are no collections on display at Frankfurt's Dialogue Museum. In fact, there's nothing to see at all, but there's plenty to hear, feel, smell and taste. This is not a simulation of blindness, but rather an adventure using (nearly) all your senses. Children, in particular, often find this easier than adults. Learn what it is like to experience your surroundings when you can't see anything at all. In the dark the most ordinary situations turn into journeys of discovery. Even a walk in the park can be transformed into an incredible adventure. Without the blind guide who walks through the darkness with remarkable ease, you would be completely lost. The environment takes on a new quality, leaving sighted visitors disoriented and dazzled and making them see things in a new way. Don't worry though, you will not be left on your own; visually impaired guides take the sighted visitors around the Dialogue in the Dark exhibition. In complete darkness, you are led through various different areas, feeling Braille writing and realising just how important it is to always remain in contact with one another.

Highlights

In front of the entrance, everything is brightly lit. But behind the doors lies a pitch-black world of darkness. In six completely light-free interactive rooms that replicate everyday situations, you can experience what it's like for people who cannot see. At the Dialogue Museum there's nothing to see, but there's plenty to hear, feel, smell, taste and experience.

The Schirn building itself is a bit like a modern art work in the heart of Frankfurt's old quarter, a light, angular design contrasting with the grand, red sandstone cathedral and the Römer, the old town hall. This art gallery lies in the heart of the city – and is an important focal point in Frankfurt's cultural life. It is also one of the most celebrated galleries in Germany and in Europe.

Schirn is the Hessian word for a structure such as a hut or a shed, but this belies its significance in the world of art. Since opening in 1986, the Schirn has staged some 200 exhibitions. It has no collection of its own but organises temporary exhibitions and projects on selected themes or the work of individual artists. The themed exhibitions have made most notable contribution to the gallery's international reputation, for instance Viennese art nouveau, Expressionism, Dadaism and Surrealism, the history of photography and subjects such as 'shopping – art and consumerism', and the visual art of the Stalin era. Major retrospectives have honoured artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Frida Kahlo, Bill Viola, Arnold Schoenberg, Henri Matisse and Julian Schnabel.

Taking a stance on topical themes and aspects of artistic creation can be said to be the Schirn's hallmark. It aims not only to engage visitors in a meaningful exhibition experience but also to encourage active participation in the cultural discussion.

Swimming for 3.8 kilometres, cycling for 180 kilometres and then a marathon run to finish: that is the challenge awaiting the 2,000-plus athletes from more than 50 countries that compete in the Ironman in Frankfurt. Facing such a tough programme, the athletes probably won't be taking too much notice of the fascinating cityscapes and scenery in Germany's banking capital and the beautiful surrounding region. Fortunately, there are many spectators on hand who can enjoy all this for them!

The first goal is completing the race, the second is qualifying for the annual triathlon world championships in Hawaii. Around half a million spectators line the Ironman route, cheering on the athletes and giving them moral support. The swim starts 12km from the city centre at Lake Waldsee in Langen. This is also the starting point for the cycling race, which passes through downtown Frankfurt, the Main-Kinzig district and the Wetterau region. Two of the most attractive points along the route for spectators are the historical village of Maintal-Hochstadt (with a 500m slope through the village centre known as 'The Hell') and the area around the castle in Friedberg/Bad Nauheim, the northernmost point of the cycling course. The dead-flat marathon route covers four laps of a circuit beside the river Main with the home straight on Römerberg square in front of the main grandstand. Cheers from the crowds carry the athletes those final few yards – and the elation they feel after crossing the line is indescribable.
