Ulm Minster

Ulm Minster – a place of silence and foresight

Ulm Minster boasts the highest church tower in the world, and has a remarkable 500 years of building history. It is a monumental construction in the heart of Ulm, and, despite its staggering dimensions, is a place of silence and inspiration.

As the saying goes, "Too many cooks spoil the broth". This, however, is not the case at Ulm Minster. The sacred building has seen many architects come and go over the centuries, with the stunning end result being a Gothic church created on the basis of medieval plans.

The first stone was laid in 1377 on the highest square in Ulm in Baden-Württemberg. The hall church, which was once said to accommodate 20,000 people, was financed by the residents. An impressive project, especially when you consider the fact that only 10,000 people resided in the city at the time.

The spirit of the Reformation hit Ulm in 1524. Today, Ulm Minster is one of the largest Protestant churches in Germany. Its 161.53 metre high church tower alone makes it look impressive from the outside, but its interior also glistens with veritable treasures. For example, it boasts one of the most beautiful and valuable German Gothic choir stalls adorned with hundreds of carved oak figures and its high altar is magnificent. The 14th and 15th century stained-glass windows in the apse, the tabernacle and the "Man of Sorrows" sculpture also turn visitors' heads. The panoramic vistas from the tower's viewing platform are spectacular. On some days, you can even send your thoughts spiralling off into the Alps.

The International Danube Festival has been taking place every other year since 1998, putting the spotlight on a different topical theme from politics or culture each time. A wide spectrum of cultures and lifestyles join together for the festival in Ulm and Neu-Ulm to celebrate the international Danube partnership and to strengthen relations between the communities connected by the river Danube.

For ten days Ulm city centre and the banks of the Danube buzz with activity, as international artists and guests gather to celebrate the coming-together of all the countries and regions along the Danube from the Swabian Alb all the way to the Black Sea via Bavaria, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania. The diverse nature of the Danube region soon becomes apparent, and is further reinforced by the many events that make this festival so special. Whether through music and dance or literature and theatre, every Danube country puts its best foot forward. This celebration of diversity is extended to the food and drink on offer too. The festival is always firmly focused on 'unity in diversity', the guiding principle of cultural cooperation in Europe in general and the Danube region in particular.
