Erfurt, cloister in St. Augustine's Monastery

St. Augustine's Monastery in Erfurt – stay where Martin Luther once lived

Martin Luther spent six years living in St. Augustine's Monastery in Erfurt. The late reformer prayed, studied, taught and was ordained here. Today, this historic site serves as a meeting place and conference venue. It is also open to anyone wishing to spend a night in the monastery's peaceful setting.

Those eager to learn more about the history of the Bible, the life of an Augustinian hermit monk or Martin Luther's time in Erfurt can visit the permanent exhibition entitled "Bible-Monastery-Luther" in the former monks' dormitory in the monastery. The Augustinian monks began construction of the church and cloister in 1276. Eighty years later, most of the other buildings in the monastic complex were complete. The closed style of the complex is impressive, and it also features an outdoor pulpit to allow services to be held outside.

On the inside, visitors' attention turns to the stained-glass windows which date back to around 1310 to 1330. The historic library holds some 60,000 volumes – making it one of the most important church book collections in Germany. The chapter house in the east wing of the conclave, which dates back to the first half of the 14th century, has an imposing look. This is also where Martin Luther was ordained.

Visitors staying in the Georgenburse pilgrim hostel, one of the city's five Luther sites, ought to feel quite close to Martin Luther as this is where he lived before joining the monastery.

Every year on the third weekend in June, Erfurt brings the Middle Ages back to life in the form of the Merchants' Bridge Festival.

Craftsmen demonstrate the skills of the past, jesters supply fun and games, minstrels sing and sword fighters do battle. The backdrop for this old town festival, the largest in Thuringia, is not unsurprisingly the Merchants' Bridge, one of Erfurt's must-see landmarks. At the same time as the festival, there is also a thoroughly contemporary fair on the cathedral square.
