The Luther Stone in Stotternheim

The Luther Stone in Stotternheim – commemorating a vow

Plain Swedish granite reminds passers-by of a memorable incident that set in motion a course that was to change the world. The Luther Stone in Stotternheim marks the spot where Martin Luther vowed to make a major change in his life.

There is a beautiful story behind the memorial. Martin Luther had just received his Master's degree, and was returning from Mansfeld, where his parents lived, to Erfurt, where he was studying law. He made his way there on foot, as all students did at the time. A heavy thunderstorm took him by surprise where the Luther Stone stands today. He feared for his life and begged: "Save me, St. Anne, and I'll become a monk!" A few days later, Luther joined St. Augustine's Monastery in Erfurt, where he took his monastic vows one year later.

Although the academic world questioned his sudden devotion to religion and assumed that Luther's choice was based on a lengthy decision-making process, he certainly experienced a change of heart that would be eminently important to the history of the Reformation. The memorial stone at the foot of the Gallows Hill in the Stotternheim district of Erfurt was put in place at a much later date: 1917, to mark the 400th anniversary of the Reformation. Pilgrims following in Luther's footsteps in Erfurt are bound to make a stop here, even if it's just to gather their thoughts at such a memorable place.

Every year on the third weekend in June, Erfurt brings the Middle Ages back to life in the form of the Merchants' Bridge Festival.

Craftsmen demonstrate the skills of the past, jesters supply fun and games, minstrels sing and sword fighters do battle. The backdrop for this old town festival, the largest in Thuringia, is not unsurprisingly the Merchants' Bridge, one of Erfurt's must-see landmarks. At the same time as the festival, there is also a thoroughly contemporary fair on the cathedral square.
