The bollenhut pompom hat is an unmistakable symbol of the Black Forest. In the village of Gutach, home of the bollenhut, this distinctive traditional hat is still worn on religious holidays. Gutach is also where one of the last remaining bollenhut makers works her magic. It takes about one week and two kilograms of wool to make one of the hats. Red pompoms symbolise that the woman wearing the bollenhut is unmarried, whereas married women wear hats with black pompoms.
