Blieskastel Monastery – where those who seek are not alone

"Pax et bonum" – peace and the good – is the slogan behind Blieskastel Monastery. Today, it is home to the Minorites, also known as "Greyfriars" in reference to their grey habit. Despite it being a place of serenity, silence and solitude, it is also a lively meeting place.

Its location in south-east Saarland is, and always has been, a popular place of pilgrimage. The monastery offers a fascinating experience with two pilgrimage gems: the "Holy Cross" Chapel and the "Unsere Liebe Frau mit den Pfeilen" (Our Lady of the Pillar) pietà, which is said to have miraculous powers. Those searching for their inner self can find inspiration, peace and new strength here, thanks in particular to the monastery's location in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Pilgrims also appreciate the surrounding area and its people, who are still deeply rooted in their traditions and live in harmony with nature.

The pilgrimage chapel was built at the end of the 17th century on the road now called "auf dem Han", and was designed for the adoration of the Holy Cross. This can be seen in the chapel's decor, especially the colourful stucco ceiling, which was only rediscovered in 1966 during renovation works. The unique 14th century "Unsere Liebe Frau mit den Pfeilen" (Our Lady of the Pillar) pietà, which is said to have miraculous powers, carved out a miserable existence in the Holy Cross Chapel before it found its worthy place at the altar in 1913, giving the pilgrimage new momentum. The chapel soon became too small for the crowds of pilgrims, so construction of the abbey started in 1925 to provide more room for the adoration of the Virgin Mary. Today, Blieskastel is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in the Diocese of Speyer, where prayers are answered and people heard.
