Hamburg Dungeon: horrible histories in the Hanseatic city

It's not just a horror show, it's real history! Hamburg Dungeon is a chamber of horrors, a theatre and a theme park rolled into one, where professional actors play out the history of Hamburg. This heart-stopping 90-minute journey to hell and back is guaranteed to give even the bravest of visitors a fright!

Sinister characters lurking in the dark depths of the Hanseatic warehouse district are awaiting your arrival. Hamburg Dungeon is a spine-chilling attraction that shows you the scary side of history. Everything is meticulously designed down to the last gruesome detail. With its startling special effects and frightening tricks of technology, Hamburg Dungeon attracts visitors from home and abroad. Your journey into Hamburg's murky past begins with a heart-stopping ride in an ancient, rickety and screeching 'elevator of doom'. Assuming you arrive below ground relatively unscathed, your eyes are met with scenes from the plague, the inquisition and the great fire of 1842. Nor are you spared the sight of the beheading of pirate Klaus Störtebeker, who was executed in 1401 at the Grasbrook in Hamburg. Things get a little less sinister on the water ride. Discover what it was like to weather the storm tide of 1717, drifting through the flooded city in a small boat. The 'labyrinth of the lost', meanwhile, will give you the fright of your life. Strong nerves are a must in the dungeon, where you experience first-hand the horrors of the Black Death and have to escape the most brutal torture methods. Other frightening shows and rides include the library of dark history, the torture chamber, the ghostly Klabautermann, the mad house and 'drop dead', the hangman ride. At Hamburg Dungeon it's all about the thrill of being scared – for families, teenagers and young adults.

Highlights

Talented character actors bring a number of historical Hamburg tales to life amid Hollywood-style staging, staggering special effects and thrilling rides. Visitors to Hamburg Dungeon are swept along by the events of the past and become part of that history themselves. But thankfully that does not apply to the beheadings! More than a million people have already enjoyed this hair-raising journey through Hamburg's sinister past – and lived to tell the tale …

Događaji

There is no doubt that the three buildings belonging to the Hamburg Kunsthalle house one of the most important public art collections in Germany: perhaps the best place to discover connections, developments and trends in seven centuries of art history. The permanent exhibition of more than 700 works and alternating displays from the museum's holdings offer a unique insight into art from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Every one of the museum's collections is important in its own right but in combination they have an immense impact. The museum presents the medieval altars of Master Bertram and Master Francke, 17th century Dutch paintings and 19th century German paintings with extensive groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann. Works of the Classical Modernist period include paintings and sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz and Max Ernst. The contemporary art section features alternating exhibitions, which have included Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Mona Hatoum and Jenny Holzer. The Department of Prints and Drawings comprises more than 120,000 works and is a museum in its own right. The Kunsthalle also runs the 'Museum At Home' initiative where art historians give their expert opinion on paintings (on canvas and wood), drawings and prints for a small fee.

The people of Hamburg know how to party. Not once but three times a year they team up with visitors for northern Germany's biggest funfair – which lasts a whole 30 days. For almost a month in spring, summer and winter, people flock to Heiligengeistfeld in Hamburg to enjoy fairground rides, food and drink, and shows. There are reduced prices for families on Wednesdays – and attention turns skywards on Fridays for the massive fireworks display.

Founded in 1996 as a 'Hamburg cycle race for pros and amateurs', Germany's biggest cycling event more than lives up to its name and has become a true classic in the cycling calendar.

It is always an impressive sight to see the seemingly endless stream of 20,000 amateur cyclists sweeping through the streets of Hamburg before heading into the area surrounding the city. A staggering 800,000 spectators fill the city centre, which is a sight in itself. Before the pros gets under way, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the entertainment programme held around the Jungfernstieg promenade and town hall. There is also a small consumer fair with around 80 stalls where visitors can browse, test and purchase all the latest cycling products. Since Jan Ullrich won here in 1997, the race has become a top event in professional circles; the International Cycling Union (UCI) has hailed the Cyclassics as one of the leading one-day cycling races in the world. It is now the only professional race in Germany to be included in the highest category of the UCI World Tour. So it comes as no surprise that the best racing teams in the world regularly appear here – and that alone is a reason not to miss this thrilling event. It's also a great opportunity to experience how friendly the people of Hamburg really are.
