St. Michael's Church, Hamburg

St. Michael's Church, Hamburg – the church with the copper roof

Its tower is the emblem of the city, commonly referred to as "the Michel": St. Michael's Church and its unmistakable copper roof is one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in northern Germany. Night tours of the tower also afford visitors glorious views of the Hanseatic city beneath the starry sky.

Majestically tall at 132 metres, it is certainly not the biggest tower in Germany, yet it boasts the largest church clock in the country. At eight metres in diameter, it really is an astonishing sight to behold. As visitors can still see today, no corners were cut in St. Michael's interior, either, even though the church has burned down three times since it was founded in around 1600 and was bombed in World War II.

Precious marble sets a worthy stage for the 20 metre high altar. The pulpit with its glorious staircase and the baptismal font are also made of the heavy stone material. The central console of the church's five truly unrivalled organs created by master craftsmen is installed in the concert gallery. The senate pew shows just how important St. Michael's Church is to the people of Hamburg. It is adorned with special decorations and the coat of arms of Hamburg on the side of the pew to highlight the church's special seating arrangement. Wealthy residents of Hamburg, including big names such as the composer Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, have been laid to rest in the crypt. From the narrow crypt, visitors can take on an athletic challenge and climb the 452 steps up the tower for sprawling views of the city. Or if they can only make it up 52 steps, there is a lift to help them the rest of the way.

There is no doubt that the three buildings belonging to the Hamburg Kunsthalle house one of the most important public art collections in Germany: perhaps the best place to discover connections, developments and trends in seven centuries of art history. The permanent exhibition of more than 700 works and alternating displays from the museum's holdings offer a unique insight into art from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Every one of the museum's collections is important in its own right but in combination they have an immense impact. The museum presents the medieval altars of Master Bertram and Master Francke, 17th century Dutch paintings and 19th century German paintings with extensive groups of works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Adolph Menzel and Max Liebermann. Works of the Classical Modernist period include paintings and sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Beckmann, Lyonel Feininger, George Grosz and Max Ernst. The contemporary art section features alternating exhibitions, which have included Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Mona Hatoum and Jenny Holzer. The Department of Prints and Drawings comprises more than 120,000 works and is a museum in its own right. The Kunsthalle also runs the 'Museum At Home' initiative where art historians give their expert opinion on paintings (on canvas and wood), drawings and prints for a small fee.

The people of Hamburg know how to party. Not once but three times a year they team up with visitors for northern Germany's biggest funfair – which lasts a whole 30 days. For almost a month in spring, summer and winter, people flock to Heiligengeistfeld in Hamburg to enjoy fairground rides, food and drink, and shows. There are reduced prices for families on Wednesdays – and attention turns skywards on Fridays for the massive fireworks display.

Founded in 1996 as a 'Hamburg cycle race for pros and amateurs', Germany's biggest cycling event more than lives up to its name and has become a true classic in the cycling calendar.

It is always an impressive sight to see the seemingly endless stream of 20,000 amateur cyclists sweeping through the streets of Hamburg before heading into the area surrounding the city. A staggering 800,000 spectators fill the city centre, which is a sight in itself. Before the pros gets under way, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the entertainment programme held around the Jungfernstieg promenade and town hall. There is also a small consumer fair with around 80 stalls where visitors can browse, test and purchase all the latest cycling products. Since Jan Ullrich won here in 1997, the race has become a top event in professional circles; the International Cycling Union (UCI) has hailed the Cyclassics as one of the leading one-day cycling races in the world. It is now the only professional race in Germany to be included in the highest category of the UCI World Tour. So it comes as no surprise that the best racing teams in the world regularly appear here – and that alone is a reason not to miss this thrilling event. It's also a great opportunity to experience how friendly the people of Hamburg really are.
