The Ammergau Alps Nature Park in Bavaria is not, as its name suggests, just known and loved for its mountain scenery, marshes, river landscapes and secluded wooded areas. The countryside's diverse beauty is actually partnered with plenty of fascinating attractions that are sure to excite and amaze all you history buffs. Culture vultures and outdoor adventurers are never in a hurry to leave the Ammergau Alps either!

Nestled between Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze, and the popular Neuschwanstein Castle are the Ammergau Alps, a region that managed to enchant a fairytale king with its varied scenery and customs and traditions. Ludwig II honoured the Ammergau Alps by bequeathing two stunning castles to the region, which now attract tourists along with countless sporting challenges, relaxing spa treatments, traditional cuisine, charming places to stay and well-known (and lesser-known) cultural highlights. The Oberammergau Passion Play is one special tradition that dates back to 1633, when the locals vowed to perform the Passion of the Christ regularly to ward off the plague. They were answered by God and protected from the plague for ever more. Since then, the village has reenacted the suffering and death of Christ every ten years to uphold their promise. Well, we promise that the Ammergau Alps are worth a visit every year and all-year round!
