Norderney – Germany's oldest North Sea spa resort

Norderney is an island of contrasts. A thriving cultural scene in the west, unspoilt nature in the east, and beaches as far as the eye can see. And all this in a unique habitat with UNESCO World Natural Heritage status.

Ferries have been departing from the coastal village of Norddeich to Germany's oldest North Sea spa resort for more than 200 years now. By the time passengers reach the island, their everyday stresses and troubles have long since slipped away and they are greeted by ruggedly beautiful beaches and unspoilt nature – whatever the time of year.

Norderney is the second-largest East Frisian island after Borkum. It covers 26.29 square kilometres, 85 per cent of which belongs to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. The island, home to an impressive range of flora and fauna, is in a constant state of flux due to the dynamic influence of the tides.

Norderney's 14 kilometres of fine, sandy beaches offer visitors a real taste of the North Sea. Water sports enthusiasts and sun worshippers alike are in their element here. Around 80 kilometres of extensive cycling and walking trails lead active holidaymakers past salt marshes and coastal wetlands, amidst stunning dune landscapes. And if you are a fan of thalassotherapy and swear by the multiple healing powers of the sea, then you have definitely come to the right place. Germany's largest thalasso centre is located on Norderney. This 8,000m² complex offers a whole host of seawater pools, saunas and wellness treatments.

In addition to its leisure and wellness facilities, the island has a lively calendar of events. Every year, Norderney celebrates the White Sands Festival over the Whitsun weekend. A sporting highlight is the ISLANDMAN Norderney triathlon, an event reserved only for the toughest of athletes!
