A holiday idyll near Winzer

Saxon Wine Route – The fascination of wine

Between Pirna and Diesbar-Seusslitz near Meissen, the Saxon Wine Route wends its way for almost 60 km through the sunny, mild and captivatingly varied valley of the Elbe, along with the international Elbe Cycle Route and the Saxony Wine Trail. This is Germany's smallest wine-growing region and the most northernly in Europe.

This centuries-old wine-growing tradition has had a significant impact on the appearance of the landscape here. Vined hillsides, splendid historic buildings and quaint little wine taverns: these are just some of the sights that visitors encounter time and time again as they continue along the route. However, the real source of this region's popularity is the harmony of its architecture, viniculture, countryside and history.

An exceptional performance from the region's vineyards

This part of Saxony enjoys a particularly favourable climate. Grapes have been grown here for 800 years, and the local porcelain manufacturing tradition dates back almost 300 years. It was wine and porcelain, together with rich silver deposits, that brought fame and fortune to Saxony. As you follow the Saxon Wine Route, you will see vines for the first time near Pirna, then in Pillnitz, close to the stately home there, and then beneath the palaces that line the river Elbe in Dresden. Just outside Dresden going towards Meissen , you will see the next vines growing on terraces on the Radebeul and Coswig slopes, which end at the romantic Elbe wine villages near Diesbar-Seusslitz.

Enchanted by wine

The Mediterranean feel, lovely scenery and cheery innkeepers create a carefree atmosphere, which works its magic as your paddle steamer cruises down the river and your gaze wanders over the vine-clad terraces and vineyards along the Elbe's riverbanks. During high-season, the world's oldest and largest paddle steamer sails daily from Dresden through the wine-growing regions to Meissen.

Where winegrowers become your hosts

The route forms a link through the most beautiful vineyards, interesting observation points and quaint wine taverns to the region's greatest treasures. Some of the charms of this delightful countryside dotted with towns and romantic villages are the countless reminders of its wine heritage: here and there a freshly whitewashed vintner's cottage, a soaring church steeple or a snug wine tavern. Stop off at a winegrower's tavern and let your host pour you one of his best vintages accompanied by some hearty fare or a sweet dish from the list of house specials, all served up with an amusing Saxon tale or two.

From early spring until right into December, Saxon Switzerland uses music to showcase itself as a region.

As part of the Sandstone & Music Festival, this lovely corner of Saxony is combining its most famous natural feature – bizarre sandstone formations – with a series of incredibly diverse concerts. Parks and baroque gardens, palaces, churches and even a stone quarry have all become concert halls in this scenery characterised by sandstone.

At the Felsenbühne Rathen, Europe´s most attractive, natural outdoor amphitheater situated right in the heart of the national park known as "Saxony`s Switzerland" Mother Nature always gets top billing. The towering rock formations found in Rathen´s impressive "Wehl Gorge" make a most suiting and natural backdrop for the performances. The Landesbühnen Sachsen (Saxony`s own traveling ensemble) will be once again bringing action, adventure, romance and beautiful music to this magnificent, sandstone theater.

Carl Maria von Weber`s grand, romantic Masterpiece, the opera "Der Freischütz", combines musical elements depicting heaven and Hades, bridal bouquets and funeral wreaths: literally, the whole gamut of emotional experience so typically associated with the German Romantic Era. The brand-new staging of this work, including lavish and opulent effects and pyrotechnics, carries the artistic signature of operatic stage-director Horst O. Kupich. Interestingly enough, Weber`s opera was actually written in the wooded and mountainous landscape surrounding the city of Dresden, and the Landesbühnen Sachsen`s performances on the Felsenbühne Rathen promise to be an unforgettable, theatrical experience for opera fans.

The sounds of horses galloping and wild shoot-outs ringing throughout the valley foretell of an entirely different kind of adventure: Western-Author Karl May`s fantasy figures Winnetou and Old Shatterhand are still in action and have been alive and well at the Felsenbühne Rathen since 1938.

Whether hiking fans or opera buffs, western enthusiasts, love-birds or extended families: everyone`s sure to find a stage production to pique their interest. After a short hike through the woods and up the mountain trail, theater-goers are overwhelmed by the magnificent view and the symbiosis of Nature and Art which unfolds before their eyes - and all of this just 40 kilometers distance from the cultural city of Dresden.

Handicapped persons may take advantage of the car service, which transports them up to the stage. Please place requests for this service in advance.
